List Of Herbs And Spices

Spices have been prize commodities for thousands of years. They were traded for centuries via the Silk Road and then above all via maritime transport, as the World gradually opened up.

Even today, they still remain a coveted commodity and are, of course, essential ingredients to both preserving and cooking food. They are also employed in medicine, perfumes, and dyeing textiles.

It’s really useful to know your spices in a particular language. Certain spices often help define the signature of a particular cuisine.

Neither Salt (le Sel) nor Sugar (Le Sucre) are considered as spices. However, they are used as seasoning and flavouring in many cuisines.

The following lists of Spices and Herbs are by no means exhaustive. They represent some of the most popular ingredients for different World Cuisines.
